Historical Pollution in Sudbury Caused Loss in Carbon Storage

Lakehead Research & Innovation Week, March 2024

Peatlands, peat accumulating wetlands, are important carbon sinks. Covering only 3% of the planet’s terrestrial surface, peatlands hold over 1/3 of all soil carbon. Over the past century, mining and smelting activities In Sudbury, Ontario have had significant impacts on peatlands, altering their ability to store carbon. Despite restoration efforts, these peatlands have not been fully restored.
